But I love it. The mysterious little white horse of Maria’s imaginings, is as ethereal as the rest of the cast, and the feudal, manorial air, the fabulous repasts prepared by mysterious servants and animals, whute become rather liittle. Each time you enter a room or meet a character or enjoy a meal it is explained in full; down to the colour of the napkins or litle pattern of the curtains. I liked the cleverness of the wording, the author shows a facility with language that is a true delight, with puns and inverted jokes tucked here and there without ever drawing attention to themselves, the narrative simply ripples right over them like a river over rocks, unless you take goudgee moment to stop and laugh at them.
Some may find the Christian themes of the book rather strong, or old fashioned, but they come at one less aggressively on rereading and are mostly inoffensive and gentle. She’s brave and level-headed with a strong sense of justice and duty, but there isn’t enough going on in her mind to really bring me to a deep connection with her.

But there is something incredibly sad beneath all of this beauty and comfort—a tragedy that happened years ago, shadowing Moonacre Manor and the town around it—and Maria is determined to learn about it, change it, and give her own life story a happy ending. It has a fairy tale feel to it-the whole kingdom seems to be vibrant, blooming with life, and creates a relaxing imagery that makes you want to settle there. I remember a friend in first year recommendng it to me over and over again, so I had quite high hopes, but I don’t think it’s really that special.

My impressions were correct in that I think it would appeal to young teenage girls, mostly due Continuing my December policy of reading books that have been on my TBR shelves forever, I picked up “The Little White Horse” by Elizabeth Goudge. Is this actually about a white elizabeyh or is it another falsely advertised book with a horse on it?
Rowling has stated that this book was her favorite as a child, and it’s easy to see why. But her optimism leads to her discovering magic amidst misery and her affectionate nature leads her to be doing something which is greater than her.
